Coach Training

CHA Training

• all SWAT head coaches Atom and above to have NCCP Coach level by Dec 31, 2006.
• all SWAT tier 1 and 2 head coaches Peewee and above encouraged to have NCCP Intermediate Level by Dec 31, 2006
• all SWAT head coaches for Initiation and Novice to have CHA Initiation level by Dec 31, 2006.
• Coach training schedules and registration forms to all coaches by Oct 5, 2006.
• Link to EMHA Coach Training webpage on SWAT website by Nov 1, 2006.

Coach Mentorship Program

• Publish Coach Mentorship “Menu” on website.
• EMHA Coach Mentorship lottery program.
• Identify 10 head coaches that would most benefit from EMHA coach mentorship
• Run a lottery at Oct 5 Orientation Meeting to select 2 coaches for subsidized mentorship.
• Identify 5 coaches to act as SWAT core for coach mentorship program.
• Coach mentors to promote category curriculum and provide direct assistance.
• Names and phone numbers of mentors provided to all coaches via the website and during the Coach Orientation Seminar.

Coach Orientation Program

• Fast start program for all coaches, especially new coaches.
• Include ALL coaches including potential assistants.
• Introduce programs, training, curriculum and rules.
• Review all registrar requirements.
• Review player development programs.
• Review coach development programs.
• Stress alternative (outdoor ice and off-ice) practice facilities.

Coach Development Seminars

• Seminars to assist coaches in developing core skills.
• Use external resources as well as SWAT coach mentors.
• Provide an introductory seminar for running a practice for initiation and new novice coaches.

Coach Resources

Category Curriculum

Category curriculum defines the set of concepts and skills that should be introduced by coaches during the year.   Curriculum is category (age) specific. It is supported by coach training and other resource materials.

Following are the actions to be taken to establish category curriculum during the year.

• Atom and above head coaches will be provided with the Nike Skills Training Program manuals for technical content.
• Develop Initiation and Novice specific curriculum (not currently addressed by Nike program).
• Develop a goaltending specific curriculum.

Player Skills Evaluation Program

• Skill assessment done at the beginning and the end of the year.
• Assistance available from the EMHA coach mentorship group.
• Skills report card developed for players and made available to category directors and parents.
• Program materials to be developed and given to coaches at the beginning of the year.

SWAT Coaches Manual

• Eliminate technical information from SWAT coaches manual.
• Technical sections replaced by Nike program manuals and/or specific goaltending manuals.
• Reorganize management information to be more of a summary and guide.
• Expand sections on communication and parent management.
• Make entire manual available on the SWAT website.

SWAT Website

• Publication of important Coach Development events.
• Enhance coach development section on the website.
• Publish online versions of manuals.
• Publish online versions of support materials.
• Create a coach drill bank.
• Create a coach feedback mailing address.

Alternative Practice Facilities

• Organize off-ice practice facilities in coordination with ice allocator.
• Talk to Urich.

Coach Evaluation Program

• Review and update Coach Evaluation form.
• Publish Coach Evaluation form prior to Minor Hockey week.

• Prepare coach registration lists
• Execute “Coach Selection Process”.
